Carabelle’s mind had been living outside of this world of boxes long before it came time for her to make any decision about a box. Thinking outside of the box was something not new to her. While two women being in a relationship in this world would be considered taboo, Carabelle never thought twice about being with Sasha.
As Carabelle walked down the street coming home from school she would walk intentionally down a block away from where she lived. On that block sat Sasha in her car waiting for Carabelle to arrive. They had been secretly seeing each other since the birthday party.
“Hey!” Carabelle said as she approached the car one day with a smile on her face.
Sasha smiled back and said, “Hey you!”
Carabelle got into the car and two gave each other a kiss without a care in the world for anyone who may be watching on that block. A sight that would have definitely caused a stir.
After their kiss, they drove off and headed to a more peaceful and private place. They drove up along the side of a small street that no one drove down in the woods of a large park. It was still daylight. There was no ominous of darkness. Just a quiet place in nature away from the preying eyes of judgement.
They continued to kiss. Then Carabelle started to take Sasha’s Nurse labeled box off.
Sasha froze for a second. “Are you sure you want to do that? If we get caught without our boxes it could be really bad.”
Carabelle rolled her eyes. “Screw them! I don’t care! We can’t be worried about what ‘they’ think.”
Sasha nodded and allowed Carabelle to continue taking her box off. Underneath Sasha’s box were regular clothes. A plain white t-shirt and blue jeans. While still wearing her regular clothes, she nervously looked up at Carabelle as if she was exposed and naked. Simply being boxless in this society was looked at as being completely nude.
Carabelle then began to carelessly take off her own box. Underneath she also had a plain a white t-shirt and blue jeans. Carabelle wasn’t nervous at all. It’s possible that was an emotion rarely felt by her. Instead, she was turned on and wanted more. She didn’t care where they were or who was looking.
They made love in the car, and it didn’t take long for them to forget where they were. It was as if they had left their world and entered a paradise. Sasha’s nerves had disappeared, and they were both now completely comfortable. They were with each other and that was all that mattered.
They decided to leave the car and walk around naked without their boxes. They held hands as they walked through the bushes and out to a small lake. It was a beautiful lake surrounded by large trees that were filled with life. Birds could be heard singing and the squirrels could be seen playing. They sat on a grassy area by the water. Carabelle put her arm around Sasha and the two cuddled.
“So, have decided what you want to do yet?” Sasha asked.
Carabelle was calm and completely unbothered by the question. “No, and I’m not sure if I will.”
Sasha became alarmed and back off from cuddling. “What do you mean that you’re not sure if you will?”
Carabelle sighed. “I mean that I’m not sure. Look, I’m not hung up on societal norms. I really don’t care what people think of me. People get so weird sometimes about making sure you’re doing what is approved by others. I mean, have you seen my mom? She gets pretty goofy sometimes. I don’t know. I just can’t get into all that. I think there is so much more to life than worrying about what others think of you.”
Sasha looked at Carabelle confused and slightly concerned for her. “Do you know what will happen if you don’t decide?”
“YES! I know. I will get a yellow box and if I really can’t make up my mind, I’ll get the red box and get labeled crazy.” Carabelle stated as she was becoming annoyed with Sasha questioning.
“I’m sorry. I respect you. I think you should do whatever you think is best for you, even if feels scary to me. It’s not about me. It’s about you and what you want.” Sasha said as she was feeling conflicting between worrying for Carabelle and respecting her space. She was growing feelings for her and wanted to support in whatever way that meant.
“So, are you saying you would make sure you had a decision by the time you had to make the official decision, no matter what?” Carabelle asked.
Sasha wasn’t quite sure on how to answer. “I don’t know. On the day of my decision, I knew I wanted to be a nurse. Not having something to pick wasn’t something that even crossed my mind. I just knew what I wanted. Everyone in my class knew what they wanted. It wasn’t an issue. I don’t think anyone even thought about it. It was just the way it was.”
Carabelle started to ponder different scenarios. “What do you think will happen when I tell them that I haven’t decided yet?
Sasha had the most concerned look on her face yet. “Well, first they’ll probably force you to pick something. If that doesn’t work, then there would definitely be a scandal. Everyone would be talking about it. Then they’ll probably give you a yellow box too. Oh, and you’re mother. I don’t know what this would do to her.”
“Forget my mom!” Carabelle snapped back. She was tired of hearing about how mom might feel about things.
Sasha had a sad face. “Don’t say that. She’s you’re mom. Why would you want to hurt her like that?”
Carabelle was starting to get worked up and fired back, “I’m not hurting her by being honest about how I feel and where I stand. If anything, she and everyone else is hurting me by trying to force me to do something that I don’t want to do yet.”
“I hear you.” Sasha simply said as she put her arm around Carabelle and kissed her on the check in an attempt to calm her nerves down.
Moments later, they heard a noise nearby.
Carabelle jumped and whispered, “Did you hear that?”
“Yeah, let’s get out of here.” Sasha said back.
The two grabbed their boxes, put them back on and started to walk back towards the road. As soon as they got to the road, they bumped right into a man with a police labeled box.
“Ladies, what were you doing in the woods together?” The police officer asked as if he knew what they were up to.
Carabelle quickly answered, “I love wild turkeys!”
The police officer was confused. “What?”
Carabelle started to chuckle to lighten the situation. “I thought I saw a wild turkey. I made her stop to go see. I’m sorry. It was goofy. I know. We’re getting back in the car. We’ll be gone in minute.”
The police officer stared at the two of them as they quicky got back in the car. He looked as he was going to say something, but instead he just stood there and watched them drive away.
Both and Carabelle and Sasha chuckled in the car as Carabelle made turkey noises as they drove down the road.
